Light passes through acrylic slightly better than through window glass, and it carries a fraction of the weight, which is why it is the usual choice wherever glass would be heavy, fragile or overhead. This is cast sheet, poured between glass rather than pushed through a die, which gives a more even surface and a cleaner edge when it is machined, polished or flame-finished.
